Why Anxiety Medication Should Be For Short Term Use

Anxiety medication is often prescribed as a way of defeating panic attacks. In this role, it has some limited success, but it is scarcely going to be a long term solution to the problem of giving the patient an attack free life. Using drugs can only temporarily mask the symptoms of these conditions, and the effectiveness of the treatment can only reduce over time as the patient's body adjusts to the drug. Nevertheless, drugs definitely do have a part to play in a short term management plan for anxiety and panic attacks.

What causes a panic attack to happen in the first place is still not really known. The medical profession has a long list of conditions and circumstances which will affect and aggravate the condition, but nothing which is given as a definitive cause. This makes it a lot easier to devise a plan to cope with the symptoms of the condition than it does to devise one to return the patient to full health. The greatest potential to return the patient to health lies with treatments such as hypnotherapy which are able to get to the root cause of the problem.

When you use drugs such as Citalopram panic attacks can be controlled for a short period of time. You can stop the symptoms of anxiety and overcome problems which have been holding you back from social situations, and you can even begin the slow climb back to a better life. The drugs come in different dosages, and the physician should always start you at the lowest dose to see what happens. The dose can always be adjusted upwards if it is not enough.

There are other drugs which are commonly used in the treatment of panic attacks, such as Xanax and other tranquilizers, but they all suffer from the same drawbacks. There are always side effects, and while side effects as mild as a dry throat may be worth putting up with for a stress free life, they still do serve to remind the sufferer of the condition. Drug treatments will be progressively less effective over time, and they can also be habit forming.

One of the worst features of anxiety medication is that it will, as will any drug, affect the immune system and weaken the body over time. This can happen even when the body has adjusted to the drug and it is no longer as effective. It is best to think of medication as a short term expedient, something which can get you over a short term hurdle while you find a better answer. If you can get to the root cause of the anxiety, with a therapy designed to probe the depths of the mind, you may find that you no longer need the anxiety medication.
