Why Managing Anxiety In Children Can Be Problematic
Anxiety in children is a phenomenon which is causing increasing worry to many people. There is a definite increase in the number of reported incidents, and in the cases which persist and need extended treatment. This is due to a combination of two factors. Firstly, there is the fact that illnesses of the mind and behavioral difficulties were ridiculed in the past, and not taken seriously. Any child who appeared to be anxious and frightened would just be told to snap out of it and stop being silly, which of course they were completely unable to do.
The adults dealing with such children had no idea how to handle them, and inside they were probably nearly as frightened as the children, although they would never admit to that. So many incidents of anxiety in the past will have gone unrecognized and unreported, so it is impossible to say how many more incidents there are today. It is certain that numbers will have increased, though, as children are subjected to far more environmental pollutants than ever before.
There is more pressure applied by parents and teachers for the child to do well in school, and expectations frequently exceed the capabilities of the child. The number of artificial chemicals used in diet, and the pollutants in the air, have greatly increased. All of this may not cause anxiety, as there are many children who grow up in the same environment who experience no anxious feelings, but it will certainly aggravate any existing tendency towards anxiety and panic. The underlying condition is almost certainly caused by mental factors, buried deep with the mind.
Treating the condition in children presents more problems than treating it in adults, as a child body is less able to cope with high doses of the drugs which are typically used to control the condition. Drug treatments cannot eradicate the root cause of the problem, but they can allow it to be managed and coped with. This happens because the chemical pathways within the brain which trigger the panic attack are temporarily blocked. In children, the drug treatments will be started at the lowest possible dose and then increased until they are effective.
Many cases of anxiety in children are treated with drugs in this way, and then left alone. This is inadvisable, as it leaves the issue of the underlying condition untreated. The drugs can become less effective over time, as the body adjusts to the dosage given. It is best to try to get to the root cause of the problem by using counseling or therapy, so that the child can grow up to live a normal drug free life. Mental therapy can uncover the hidden memories which are causing anxiety in children.
